-14- phrase in their employment advertising by writing them a letter of commendation. 10) One of the members of the Commission contacted the Chairman of the University Human Rights Committee and obtained a summary of the areas in which the University Committee has been working and gathered information from them about their future plans. IV [underline]Conclusions[end underline] Some of the following observations based on the Commission's first year of experience and on its work and contacts seem to be in order. 1) Iowa City, Iowa, by and large, is a favorable community in the area of human rights and human relations, but there are attitudes which must still be changed and attitudes which must still be learned for the first time by many. 2) Our community does not have large minority groups and this might tend to hold to a minimum problems in human relations. However the transient nature of these minority groups multiplies the possibility of problems to a degree which could make their frequency equivalent to that contained in minority groups several times their size. 3) There are many sincere and active groups of citizens in Iowa City who are vitally interested in the area of human relations. Much effort should be directed to coordinating and effectively using these citizen groups. 4) Iowa City as a University center with its wealth of intellectual resources should be a leader in the State of Iowa in the field of human rights and human relations. In this regard, effort should be made by the City's Commission to establish a working knowledge of efforts of the University Human Rights Committee. 5) The Commission needs to become ever more aware of the national and international work being done for human rights and to better human relations.
